Currie, 13, became the youngest ever winner of the ladies club championship after an incredible performance at Wagga Country Club over the last couple of weeks.
Currie led from start to finish to claim a commanding 12-shot victory.
The Riverina Anglican College (TRAC) student shot rounds of 80, 84, 80 and 89 to defeat defending champion Kim Robinson by 12.
The modest young sportswoman is happy to become the club’s youngest winner.
“It’s pretty cool. I didn’t think I would come out with the win but I was stoked,” Currie said.
“It’s really good. I was happy with how I played.”
Currie finished second behind Robinson last year but did not come into this year’s championships with any lofty ambitions.
“I was hoping to play four good rounds but coming out with the win was a bonus,” she said.
“We had two more school teachers that were playing this year so I was hoping I would at least get in the top four but I just wanted to play four consistent rounds.”
With her handicap down to 8.6, Currie hopes to one day become a professional.
Wagga Country Club professional Kurt Stegbauer, Currie’s coach, said it was a popular and well-deserved victory.
“Josie is a really nice kid and everyone loves her out here,” Stegbauer said.
“It’s a big thing and she’s been working hard to get to this point. She’s super talented and quietly competitive.”
TRAC principal Paul Humble said the school was proud of Currie.
“The entire college community is very proud of Josie as she continues to develop into an excellent young golfer. We are so pleased that her effort and achievement she has gained in golf is buried in all she does at the college,” Humble said.
Currie has also benefited from a junior scholarship from Kilbrogan Trading as the club’s rising star.
“Josie is an absolute pleasure to be involved with. Her approach to her schooling and life as a young gifted sports person is amazing,” Janet Smith said.
