Detective Inspector Phil Malligan said police are out in full force targeting speeding, fatigue, seat-belts and drivers using mobile phones and other distractions.
The operation started on December 19 and will continue through until midnight on New Year's Day, with double demerits in place until that time.
Detective Inspector Malligan said police have done a "significant amount" of roadside breath and drug tests since the operation started.
He said there were "very minimal" positive tests, which was a good result.
In other news:
"At this stage, drink driving has been quite low and certainly the message has been getting out there ... and motorists are using alternative methods to get to-and-from their destinations," he said.
"The community are listening and we want it to be a safe Christmas and new year."
Detective Inspector Malligan said Traffic and Highway Patrol have detected "significant speeds" on the Hume Highway.
He said some drivers are travelling at 30 to 40 kilometres over the speed limit.
"The most important message that police want to get across ... is that we want families to arrive safely to their loved ones," he said.
"Drive to the conditions. If you are feeling tired, pull over. Police are targeting speeding, if you drink drive you're an idiot, the messages are out there."
