A post stating "girls in Wagga, please be safe" and containing a physical description of the purported attacker has been widely shared.
"There is currently a man going around raping women at knifepoint," the post stated.
"He has raped six women since Saturday. Please do not go anywhere by yourself."
Riverina Police District stated on its own Facebook page that "we have not received any reports of sexual assault".
"It was put to me that there might have been a person stalking women in Wagga, but there have been no reports to support that," Superintendent Bob Noble said.
"It is most probably a scurrilous rumour, but I would encourage anyone who has experienced any sort of violence, stalking or attack to contact police as a matter of priority."
Riverina Police District has encouraged anyone who has been a victim of crime to contact Riverina Police on 02 6922 2599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
