On the march: Having served as secretary for the organising committee of the Kangaroo contingent, Mark was one of the first men to enrol for the march.
War experience: Mark was appointed Temporary Corporal for the duration of the journey on the Ceramic and promoted to Acting Corporal to assist with training in Egypt and England.
He joined his unit in France in August, 1917, at which time the Australians were engaged in the Flanders Offensive in an effort to drive the Germans from Belgium.
In September of that year he was wounded in the Battle of Polygon Wood and did not return to the front, instead taking up duties as a Pay Sergeant.
Life afterwards: Mark returned to Australia to an official welcome in Wagga.
He married Dorothy Harris Fayle in North Sydney in 1927 and had four children.
They resided in Lane Cove and North Sydney and Mark was employed as a clerk.
He again served in the Australian Army, with the 8th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps, during the Second World War.
He died in 1975.
