The Daily Advertiser understands that other providers such as Telstra have been unaffected by the tower outage.
At the time of writing Optus users could not access the internet or make calls from their phones except for the 000 emergency number, which is always available.
The Daily Advertiser contacted Optus, however they were unavailable for comment.
However, the Optus webpage says the blackout was caused by a power outage which is affecting the Wagga area.
"Sorry, an OPTUS mobile tower close to you isn't working," the website says.
"There's no power supply to the OPTUS mobile network in this area. Your mobile service may be interrupted during this time. We'll let you know when power is restored and everything is back in working order."
Update
Optus has since reconnected their mobile tower, and all internet and phone services appear to be back online.
An Optus spokesperson said their team had worked quickly to reconnect the services once the tower went down.
"Optus can confirm that there was a temporary network outage in the Wagga Wagga area on Tuesday 29th December," the spokesperson said.
"Optus' network operations team identified the cause of the fault and restored all services as quickly as possible.
"We understand how important it is for customers to stay connected and apologise to those affected. We thank customers for their patience while services were restored."
